Escapism

We wake up in the morning to the depressing news of the day. We have a cup of coffee with extra caffeine to lift our spirits. Some may light a joint to not have to think. Others entrench themselves in morning rituals such as exercise routines, yoga, or anything else to let them escape. What are we running from? Our real feelings of discontent are always floating in our subconscious. We will never be beautiful enough, rich enough, smart enough, or happy enough to be the one in that full glossy ad or zippy commercial in between the dreary news blurbs of houses burning down, children being killed, thousands ethnically cleansed from their homelands. The only thing we have is our little escape. Whether it be drowned in Xanax or white zinfadel, we are so oblivious to those around us. This escapism is keeping us from connecting, comparing observations, and finding joy in our relationships. Put down that glass of wine, marijuana pipe, jogging shoes, or computer that is isolating you. It is time to escape all these man-made diversions and feel life again. Let the sun warm your skin, feel the velvet petals of flowers in bloom, let your toes run through the cool blades of grass.
