The Photo

She walked towards the light. The irony wasn’t lost on her. It had been her mother’s death which had led her on this journey and now she was nearing the end of it. The end of this stage of the journey at least. What lay ahead she wasn’t really sure of but she would embrace the challenges of each new day, one at a time. She missed her mother, her words of comfort, her guiding voice, her encouragement, even her criticisms.
When she had passed her dying words had pointed her daughter to the old jewellery box on her dresser. There she had found the old black and white photograph with the grainy image. It was clearly her mother but the man she was with wasn’t instantly recognisable. Her mother’s arms were cradling a precious bundle and the look on both the adults’ faces was one of immense pride. Her mother’s last word had been “Father”.
After the funeral she had examined the photo more carefully, the echo of her mother’s voice saying the one word, “Father”, intrigued her further. Had her mother finally, as a last gesture, told her the truth of her family? She knew the man she had grown up calling Dad wasn’t her true father, but out of respect for his feelings it was never a topic for discussion. Even when he died the two women had never spoken of it. But then her mother had said the taboo word and given her a single clue.
She walked through the tunnel from the ship to her new home and took the photograph from her pocket. Turning it over was a single name, James, and an address here in New York. It was that address which would lead her to the next stage of her journey. He may be dead already. if he isn’t it may be a fruitless chase. maybe he will not want to know her. That was a chance she would have to take if she was ever going to discover the truth behind the photo.
