ABOUT Nine Leaves in the Wind
This has been my most popular painting to date, probably because its based on a views of the Rio Grande and the Sandia Mountains with the unique colors that give this area its renown natural beauty. (As many of you know, I am also working on a mural project and this painting was raffled and the original mural design was sold to raise money for the mural paint. I have also sold reproductions from my online store at redbubble.com/people/dweaverross.)

Layers 1 and 2 – The background layers were sketched from two overlapping views of the Rio Grande with the Sandia Mountains in the background — along the ducks and geese floating on the water.

Layer 3 – Nine cranes standing on a sand bar in the middle of the river with nine Canadian Geese flying in overhead.

Layer 4 and 5– Repeated silhouettes of Desert Willow trees, which ended up as orange with blue shadow shapes distorted by the water in the final painting.

Layer 6 – The nine Cottonwood leaves whirling in the wind and the number 9s.

Finally, all the layers were blended together with an unique autumn palette.

THE POEM: Rio Grande Reliquary

Nine leaves fly in the wind,
reflections rippling in the river,
along the banks the desert willows
bend as winter strips them to the bone.
