ABOUT Six Phases of the Eclipse of the Heart
The Six of Hearts has five layers and is one my favorites.

Layer One – The background layer is based on a painted ivory plaque from the lid of a coffer showing the Pharaoh Tutankhamen (King Tut) and his wife in a garden from his tomb. The original ivory is probably dark with age, but it suggested a night scene to me. Tut has his pharaoh’s staff and it reminded me of Colin and the cane he used towards the end of his life. In addition, I changed his wife into a figure resembling an idealized version of myself. The lower part of the original image showed young women plucking mandrakes. I changed these images into images of our sons playing. I also found it interesting that in ancient Egypt the mandrake was used among other things for its medicinal qualities including as a painkiller, and of course Colin had to use opiates to control his pain.

Layer Two – Since it suggested a night scene I superimposed an images of the six phases of the moon over hearts in a circle around the two figures and placed the earth in the center.

Layer Three – The scalloped edges along the top of the original ivory lid reminded me of moths and at the time our home in Albuquerque had many fruit trees and a surplus of moths. I find moths both haunting and beautiful and put images of different moths over each of the six heart-moons and a seventh one over the earth. I believe that each of these seven types of moth is found in New Mexico.

Layer Four – Then there are five swords extending from each of the six hearts and meet in the center of the image, suggesting that each stage of the cycle of life contains passion and pain.

Layer Five – The traditional Six of Hearts card.
