Artist's Description

Scotland is reasonably well-placed for the aurora borealis. Not as good as Finland or Canada, but better than England or France. Displays of the aurora in central Scotland are often fairly low in the north, consisting of curving arcs or bands of green, possibly with longer green or red rays above. Of course, the colour tends to be fairly faint and not easily seen with the naked eye, but photography really picks it up.

Rayed band, with red rays above. Orange sodium glow from Fife, just above the horizon. The light is reflected in the River Forth.

Deneb is at upper left, and the head of Draco just upper right of centre. The exposure was quite short, as no trailing is visible in the stars – probably 20-30 sec.
