Artist's Description

Late afternoon winter light on Arapawa Island in the New Zealand’s Marlborough Sounds. The island forms the northern side of Tory Channel (named after an early settler ship the “Tory”), the main access route for ferries and other vessels to Picton at the head of Queen Charlotte Sound.

The island was cleared of most of its indigenous forest in the 1800’s and early 1900’s for farming. It is also know for its whaling posts which ceased operation in the 1960’s.
