Artist's Description

Often marine flatworms are seen swimming through the sea rhythmically undulating their bodies to propel themselves through the water. When hunting they adopt a ground foraging technique on the trail for tiny animals such as protozoa ~ copepods and worms. Often they feed on immobile animals such as bryozoans ~ ascidians and small mollusks.

It is unusual to see their ‘tentacular folds’ sensing for prey and pointed out like ‘rhinophores’ which are most often more noticeable on nudibranchs.

Platyhelminthes literally means ‘flatworm’. On another dive within a sandy bay area ~ I noticed the dormant sleeping phase of this ‘gold dotted’ flatworm ~ it was tightened into a circle ~ motionless and “flat as a pancake!”
