Artist's Description

Scleractinian corals can also light up! Just like a ‘Christmas’ Tree!

Alcyonacea (the soft corals) do not produce hard ‘calcium’ carbonate skeletons. Soft corals contain minute ‘spiky skeletal elements’ called sclerites ~ often needed in species identification.

Sclerites give these corals structural support ~ and at the tips of the branches provides a spiny spiky texture ~ that deters predators.

Here a beautiful branch of dendronephthya ‘soft coral’ ~ catches the light of the flash to reflect the “sclerites” of the tree ~ adding a ‘vivacious luminosity’ of reds, oranges and yellows ~ to decorate the branches!.

Who needs plastic baubles ~ the OCEAN ~ certainly doesn’t!!! :-(

Wishing one and all ~ a Very Merry Christmas and a wonderful decade ahead ~ of protecting and cherishing ~ the OCEANS!!! :-)
