Artist's Description

Have you ever been called a “Grubby Little Urchin” before..? When I was a kid and used to come home all mucky… I was always being called this… at the time I didn’t even know what an “urchin” was…!!?! :D

It was only when I started rockpooling off the coasts of North Wales that I understood and became more aware of their role in the environment.

Now as I’m much older I’m finding that calling my own kids “grubby little urchins” ~ is a little bit of an insult to the urchin itself…!

Prized somewhat as a delicacy for their roe (which are the gonads of both the male and female sea urchin), they are extracted substantially for our consumption…

But it’s the urchin that keeps on tidying up – after us… keeping the coasts clear of excess detritus and fecal matter by mowing the excess algae that settles on our coral reefs due to ‘eutrophication’ ~ an excess of phosphorus and nitrogen caused by fertilisers and manmade runoff ~ that ‘we dirty humans’ keep on pumping out there…

So the next time you eat sea-urchin roe or call your sons and daughters “grubby little urchins” ~ think twice about it…

Sea-urchins clean up our mess and do us all a favour…!!! ;-)
