Artist's Description

This is my contribution to the City Tees Challenge

The title of my creation “From Madrid to heaven” – in Spanish “De Madrid al cielo” – is the proverb people of Madrid usually say to express their love for their city.

Madrid is the city where I was born.
I have designed my city in a starry night and a blue moon is illuminating famous buildings and monuments, old and modern ones.
I have designed the name of MADRID with 5 of its most important icons:
. M…with the Door of Europe – also known as Towers KIO – adding a typical shawl between them. These two towers are inclined and they are the exit of the capital.
. A…with one of the doors of the Temple of Debod, a present of Egypt to Madrid in 1968.
. D (a backwards capital D or a small d) …with half Las Ventas bullring, known as “La Monumental”.
. R…with the bear and the “madroño” tree which are the symbols of Madrid.
. I…with Torrespaña (Spain Tower) TV Tower.
. D…the other half of Las Ventas bullring.

Behind the name of Madrid I have drawn the Cuatro Torres Business Area (CTBA) (Four Towers Business Area) in electric blue.
People from Madrid are known as “gatos” (cats), that’s why I have drawn four cats below; they are in black reflecting part of Madrid design in their bodies.
Near the cats you can see the typical sweets of Saint Isidro, the patron saint of the city, festivity celebrated on May 15th; cats are playing with them. These typical sweets are called “rosquillas”, kind of doughnuts. There are 4 kind of “rosquillas”: “tontas” (stupid ones), “listas” (clever ones), Santa Clara’s and the French ones.
On top I have drawn a couple in love and their shadow under the moon; they are “castizos” (pure/genuine) wearing the typical and traditional costumes of the region.
Madrid is a very nice city where people from all over the world have a very good time, specially by night painting the city red!
Enjoy it!
