Artist's Description

Susan Kimball posted a gorgeous image of the Jupiter Lighthouse here. It reminded of the time I actually climbed it. We had lived in Florida for six years, and I kept saying I wanted to climb it but I’m afraid of heights. So a couple months before we moved back home to Oregon….my husband and I climbed it. My husband has no fear, but for me the narrow circular steps with a handraid on the right were a challenge. But I just about lost it when I walked out onto the 3-foot wide platform ringing the top. The guide, in his 70’s, (20 years my senior!) was casually leaning against the rope (yes, just a a rope encirles the platform) and explaining the lighthouse history. I plastered myself against the lighthouse wall, glanced at Perry Como’s house (the guide kept pointing it out), fired off three shots and then spent my time taking pictures of the lenses inside the lighthouse. Going down was another story…now the handrail was on the left so I had to squat down to place my right hand on the stairs behind me…I’m sure I looked liked a crazy monkey…I wasn’t alone, though…another person almost had to be carried down. When I got to the bottom, my legs were wobbly and I felt as tho’ I had just completed 500 lunges…but at least I can say I climbed the Jupiter lighthouse. I’ve posted a few lens shots too.
