Artist's Description

After photographing Charlie’s Shams, I like to experiment with the patterns and color to reinvent the fabric into what resembles an abstract painting. I choose what part of the piece would lend itself to my exploring fabric art as function and beauty. I see figures dancing in a very graceful and surreal landscape, possibly underwater. It almost has the feel that the beautiful movements of the shadow dancers could be underwater in a cave where they can breathe in this abstract surreal photograph. I always see great images in the pieces I choose to work on and will be doing more experimentation with recreating our stack of many fabrics to give the phograph a surreal and painterly effect. I see on the very top of this photograph on the upper left corner a graphic picture of a boy. This was not intended;however when I finish a piece I am often surprised by what appears. Given how small the icon is, I was caught by surprise since it looked like I had imported a photograph to this fabric painting. i hope to do more work transforming one media into another. Like my rock and bark photos, there are so many images wihin this piece if we take the time to look. Fabric designs offer me a great way to enhance my visual perceptual skills using another medium.
Sally Omar, an eloquent and brilliant poet on redbubble wrote a poem to pair with “Shadow Dancers.” Her words are intuitive and lyrical and the shadow dancers are moving to the rhythm of her words.
Shadow Dancers no one can see
They dance only for me
In my mind in a special place
I see them as clearly as my face
Dancing to a native drum
Swaying one by one
Fire burning brightly on the ground
So much native sound
There are men in headdress
They won’t let me rest
Chanting softly all the time
And singing in mystical rhyme
The women in colorful wonder
Each dancing asunder
A dance so marvelous
Bringing them happiness
