Artist's Description

Light was fading when I took this picture and I was so close to the ocean on this deck under the homes that the sea spray hit my face and camera. Although there are spots of water on the lens, it reinforces how close I was to the water feeling refreshed in the cold spray. At high tide, there is sand and furniture under the houses where the residents and children play and watch the ocean. You can see a child’s blue pail among the beautiful boulders left during low tide that adds a whimsical touch to this image. Looking at the rust and wood of the houses adds a special ambience at Big Rock Beach where I have often rented houses for several weeks and feel like I am far from home. I only have to drive fifteen minutes to enjoy the beach in Malibu. The decks are built for the residents to enjoy the sea no matter how high the tide is. The splashing of the waves as they break on the shore at night add a dramatic effect. As evening settles the contrast of dark and light create a special atmosphere enhanced by the lighting under the homes that highlight the beautiful boulders, restaurants and homes on the seashore. The weathered and rusty underpinnings of the homes that line the shore reveal nature’s impact on
the environment and also create a visceral feeling that
allows you to feel an intimate part of nature’s beauty as the harsh spray of water and wind brings you closer to the power and mystery of the sea.
