Childhood Memories

Little girl with pigtails and freckled face,
loving on puppies and kittens always.
Climbing trees, exploring rock formations,
Filled with wonder at all God’s creations.
Setting out at dawn to Elephant Rock,
All alone, nobody with whom to talk,
For lizards and small gopher snakes she scans,
Giggles at lizard tails left in her hands,
Scampers over Elephant Rock in glee,
Such adventure, she lives her life fully.
Enjoying life as only a child can,
Grabbing it with gusto, ribbons of sand.
Oh that I could turn back the clock of time,
Eager to find tadpoles in ponds of slime,
Sitting in orange trees for hours on end,
Pretending that I with the tree can blend.
Little white orange blossoms smelling so sweet,
Fuzzy caterpillars, baby birds tweet,
Honey bees buzzing, terrorizing me.
Twilight games of “olly, olly all come free,”
With brothers, sister, and neighborhood kids,
Tag, Red Light, Green Light, frisbees made of lids.
Cowboys and Indians, Hide ’n Seek,
Not the best player, I was way too weak.
Trips to the beach, Long Beach and Malibu,
From waves to run, under sand to hide, too.
Castles to make, crabs to capture, such fun,
Sand dollars to find, bleached white by the sun.
Hearing songs of the Beatles and Beach Boys,
As I played with my dolls and other toys.
Was part of the life I knew way back when,
But today is now and yesterday then.
