Artist's Description

i went to the salt flats, at billingham bottoms, semi tidal, the whole area is covered in pipe work, exporting chemical nasties all over the country, the ground beneath is made up of artesian wells, which were brine filled. the brine is pumped out and the cavities filled with ethylene. the brine is pumped into surface resevoirs. the whole area is a mass of pipework, pumping stations etc.and is the home of many huge chemical plants, and an atomic power station, also where the americans sent the so called death ships to be dismantled. they have been there years now and work has yet to start. the area is also a wildlife reserve, thousands of migrating birds and sealls are here too it is a protected area and a large visitor center is nearing completion. this is the north side of the river tees
