Artist's Description

Or Showy Evening Primrose……Few other wildflowers are as widespread across Houston, Texas as the evening primrose. It occurs in abundance along freeways and bayous, in vacant lots, and in lawns and boulevards throughout the city. The large, delicate flowers complement the floral display of bluebonnets and paintbrush in early spring, but the blooming season also extends into the summer. Many Texans call the plant “buttercup” but the name, too, is more properly applied to an entirely different group of plants with waxy yellow petals…The name is from the cupping of the petals and the abundant butter colored pollen. ORENOTHERA, the genus of the evening primroses, was a name used by Pliny in the first century for a plant reputed to produce sleep when its juice was consumed with wine.
Taken at Holiday Lake 50 miles North of Houston, Texas….
