Artist's Description

|WHO-MAN| project presents people from different countries or ethnic background, to explore the respective traditional roots that are often forgotten in our modern affluent world.

Countries Edition features people based on the countries they come from, which includes the fashion designs from the different eras and time periods.

|WHO-MAN| Countries Series: China – Tang is inspired by the character Empress Wu Zetian from the Chinese television series – The Empress of China (武媚娘). As the first female leader of Ancient China, not only does she has a great influence on the Tang dynasty, but also the history of China as the first symbol of female empowerment. During her time, Chinese Buddhism has reached its highest point, as she fights against Confucius’s thought against women. She made authors write biographies about famous women, and showcased women to made them equal to men. This was China’s first step towards bringing feminism into the society.

The designs include:

  • Fish: good luck, fortune, longevity and fertility
  • Peony: known as the king of flowers, symbolising the rich and honoured
  • Circles/spirals: stands for fulfilled, oneness, perfection and unity
  • Phoenix: power and marriage
  • Flower: beauty
  • Clouds: which symbolises the sky
