Artist's Description

“Unchained” combines Evelyn de Morgan’s painting “Hope in the Prison of Despair” with a pose from Auguste Rodin’s “Crouching Woman.”

Evelyn de Morgan recognized, “Art is eternal, but life is short…I have not a moment to lose.” And, mentored by her mother-in-law—a spiritualist and social activist—de Morgan sought new heroines with which to construct original images of Victorian womanhood. Her “Hope in the Prison of Despair” preceded the first English suffragette society by a decade.
