Camera Nikon D700 with 28-300mm Nikon Lense. ISO 160, 1/40th sec, f/11, 160mm.

I was given a tip by an RB friend Richard { AKA. Hertsman} that a Steam Train would be passing through several stations in London, so I made my way to London Olympia in Kensington. It was a wonderful sunny day with quite a few Steam Train enthusiasts gathering. I got chatting with a few of them. Some of the regular photographer and train buffs got quite angry with others who were standing in front of the line-of-sight and began shouting at them to move back. I just waited, and waited, the train was late by about ten minutes and it came into the station on the wrong side for the photographers. It was quite a comedy moment as the passengers waiting to board all rushed over the bridge and the photographers on my side all legged it to as well over the bridge to get a good position, but I stayed put and just hoped for the best.
It was my first experience of photographing steam trains and was quite surprised to see so many. Most of the enthusiasts had camcorders and little pocket cameras, with books to take notes of numbers and times etc… I was one of only two people I could see that had a DSLR and a monopod. One young guy was laying down with a mini tripod to get a low level shot. He got shouted at too…
One highlight was meeting an old guy called Dave in his 90s who’d been a Steam Train Engineer during the 2nd World War and had always been keen to see his beloved engines whenever he got the chance. He was covered in medals and badges. When I asked if I could take his picture he proudly displayed his badges and recounted his history to me. What an interesting life he’s had and didn’t look over 75 to me. Picture below.

I enjoyed my morning at the station waiting for the Steam Train to come in, and will try and get some more when I visit the Bluebell Line soon.
