“He had knocked the breath out of himself as he hit the ground and thought he might black out. Catherine struggled to her feet.
“Go on!” he told her. It’s me they want. Leave me!”
But Catherine was not going anywhere. Bravely she stayed with Jack as the bullies descended on them. He felt such a coward. If anything happened to Catherine, he would never forgive himself.
He got to his feet, gasping for breath as the gang closed around them.”
