Chicken Dinner

Chickens were hard to catch even for Martin’s twelve year old legs. But Judy was different. Judy was his sister’s tame pet chicken. Martin spread Judy’s neck on the wood block. A single stroke of the axe and the deed was done. His mother had already prepared boiling water for the plucking.

She recognized the hen’s dark tipped feathers. Martin received a scolding from his mother. Of course, there was no going back.

At Sunday dinner the next day, Martin’s father praised his wife for the tasty food. Martin said, “yes, Judy sure does taste good!” Everyone got quiet. His sister demanded to know, “Is this Judy?”

Martin found out that anger at the dinner table was not pleasant.

After dinner, Martin walked outside. He still had chores to do but they could wait. He took the path toward the creek and solitude.
