Fearless Squirrel

FEARLESS SQUIRRELDoc DodsonA baby squirrel came down from a tree. She walked like a dog, then over to me.My eyes were astonished with curiosity. She climbed on my shoe, then up to my knee.I snuggled her ears, and scratched her back. She purred like a kitten, she really liked that.I fed her some peanuts, some water, some breadThen let her be free with the sun on her head. Then came the night, and someone’s cat.A bite, a shake, and that, was that.I knew it was coming. I knew what must be.Yet I felt so bad for the woodland baby.A summer night’s sadness, morn and regret.Should have taken her in, should have made her a pet. There’s no life in this world, for a fearless squirrel.
