Artist's Description

A small grave lies in our little country cemetery, (Macon, Georgia USA), near our home. The cemetery once had a church but it was burned to the ground by Sherman and the Union troops during the Civil War (1865). The grave is a simple one covered with a slab of concrete that someone poured onto the ground. Someone wrote the lettering by hand with perhaps a stick while the concrete was still wet. It looks like a woman’s hand writing. The mother’s, perhaps. She did the best she could to ensure that her 8 day old baby, Jet B. McDawl, would not be forgotten. And 94 years later, he has not been. The headstone reads:
Jet B. McDawl
Born
Oct. 27, 1917
Died
Nov. 4, 1917
