The immensity of Pain

There is a singular fierceness in pain –
Hard, sharp, crystalline, all pervasive –
In the quiet stillness of the night,
The deep roaring of day,
It rains down and out and through and in –
And still I bathe in it and it in me –
Ceaseless, unending . . .
There were once days when I danced in abandon
On the cool bank of the mossy river –
The water singing its notes upon slick, smooth stones . . .
Those were the moments of unknowing . . .
I stoop over this page,
My cells vibrating to another tune – aching, knowing, worn . .
Barely remembering days of freedom
From the immensity of pain -
It has an unflinching honesty, an unbending will . . .
So I forget the spirit of the girl,
Drowned in the fluids of the crone,
And make fast the companions
Of those generations beyond me.
They see the lines carved in my face,
That particular bend just shy of breaking
Of a back that’s seen better days . . .
Days of innocence, of lightness, of unknowing,
Of being without pain . . .
