Strands

We can never really know the strands
we string in the web fibers of our lives -
how we get caught, and why, and when.
I like to think I strung
a priceless net, one that snagged
a Prime Minister, or a grandmother
of a young girl who in decades hence
discovers the AIDS cure.

But mostly, I can see the threads
that captured me -
the people who, in small and large ways,
lifted me out of my darkness,
letting in just enough light
so I could see my way
to the other side of that
far-reaching river,
catching me from drowning,
letting me gather in one more breath
to clear my head
and offer me salvation.

Perhaps I am that grandmother
whose offspring will one day
create a miracle for more.
I’m not asking you to validate
my existence baby girl -
its just that a whole lot of people
have caught me in their nets -
and I have yet
to figure out why.

Artist's Description

The strands of life from one person to another capture them, affecting their lives. I wonder about the strands of my life. I wonder how my life impacts future children in my genetic family.
