PROCESS: Taurus Moon Series

I paint images of my favorite places and objects in sets or series, while exploring color and texture and media. I sketch until an object or image emerges that catches in my body, often taking my breath away. Its a little like falling in love. As I work the image, small ink, pencil or painted sketches are created; I never part with the first few studies as they contain the seeds for the series; they are a personal journal of my art. The sketches become larger and change as the exploration of the image is exciting to paint.

The Taurus Moon series began with my knitting of a blanket for myself in Oregon’s winter colors. People who don’t look think winter is grey. Oregon winter colors are very different than Southern or Northern California winter colors: there are bright golden yellows, deep reds and purples in barks; grey-greens and deep greens of evergreens.

My old studio sat next to the edge of a small cattle farm. The cows and bulls came very close to my windows sometimes, and one day I began sketching one of the bulls who stood by himself away from the others.

A pencil sketch turned into a quick acrylic sketch, below. While I didn’t like the outcome, I saw the possibilities in the sketch; this one I keep for myself.

Pieces of the series began to be painted quite small, under 8-inches square; these, too, are not for sale:

After that one piece, many other small sketches ensued in many primary colors, such as the one below, and more can be seen on my website, http://www.dkatiepowellart.com/index.html; some are also for sale here at Redbubble.

Large canvases were painted, and I had exhausted the image.

I don’t talk about the image or process when I am in the middle of a series. Talking exhausts the energy. I don’t let people into my studio who will comment on what I am painting. I stay away from thunking about what the images mean; when I understand the meaning of the image, my interest in it wanes. All these are the strange quirks of my process.

My images in this series can be reposted as long as there is a link back to zenkatwrites. My older work all says “©D.Katie Powell” however, I am now agreeing to the Creative Commons Attribution-Non-Commercial 4.0 International License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/l...
