Artist's Description

Taken at Sweetwater Wetlands, Tucson, AZ 3012-10 with my Canon Powershot SX10IS

Common Moorhen is locally common in the Southeast and Southwest, where it prefers extensive freshwater marshes. Eastern Populations are strongly migratory.

Moorhens forage mostly in marshes or while swimming near cover, usually reed beds; they may also be seen walking on dry land like gallinules and coots. They are strong swimmers though their toes lack lobes or webbing.

A group of moorhens is called a “plump” of moorhens.

VOICE A rolling, high-pitched, nasal trumpeting with a piteous quality, slowing toward end; also a high keek, similar to Purple Gallinule.
