Artist's Description

Taken at the Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum Feb 2010 with a Canon Powershot sx10is

The Mexican Grey Wolf is also known by the Spanish word Lobo. Government-sponsored predator control programs of the late 1800s and mid 1900s led to its elimination in the wild. It was listed as endangered by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) in 1976. In Arizona, the last known animal was taken in 1970. In 1998, the USFWS, in cooperation with the Az Game and Fish Dpt, released the wolves into the Apache National Forest in eastern Arizona.

The M.G.Wolf is the smallest subspecies of gray wolf. Its coat is buff to gray with black and rust tones. It lives and hunts in packs of 6-12 members.
