1950s: So here is the first of my collection. I got the idea to do this whilst watching American Horror Story: Asylum. I wanted to see if I could recreate my characters in a different time period. Obviously keeping certain aspects of each character but setting it in the 50s. I chose to set this piece in an American diner which is iconic of the 1950s in America. I wanted it to be instantly recognizable. I chose to ad pictures of people who were icons of the 50s as well as a few from before and a number of vintage adverts for things like Ketchup, Cigarettes and Candy. It’s amazing looking at some of the ads at how sexist they were back then. I went for an ironic angle adding the picture of the ketchup which suggests that women are incapable of opening a bottle..normally since the female characters I create are predominantly strong and quite fierce. So the design for each character’s outfit was mainly to reflect the personality of each character. Firstly, Discord, his look is very Buddy Holly as he is a somewhat sensible member of the group. Bam Bam, I went for a James Dean inspired look for Bam as I think the white t-shirt look suits him. Castiel is dressed in a sort of classic outfit, worn by the likes of Bob Hoskins in Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Andromeda looks like she’s straight out of Grease, a cool chic look completely true to the type of character she is. Róisin wears a stylish and corporate outfit which suggests authority and strength and finally, Persiphone…I only realised after I’d drawn her how similar she appear to Elizabeth Short, the infamous Black Dhalia. Persiphone’s outfit was intended to be a retro take on the gothic corset and skirt she wears usually. So, to my American friends and connoisseurs of the period, I ask, did I successfully recreate the decade? That is the question.
