Prescience of that funeral

These pan-pipes; looking
through them it
seemed I saw a casket passing on the blank shore
and I watched from the dunes
like a spirit.

The place of the seagulls unsure – carrion white blurs,
and the unsettling organ voice of the wind

In the trees, the greasy coastal shags
being symbols of sadness
drooping as they do,
constantly somewhere,
promising nothing tomorrow.

Pall-bearers are made faceless at the peak of their grief are
become merely the sandy stumps of the coffin,
marching from one end of the endless to the other
a twelve-legged wooden box driven by the will of bones.

2003?
I’m not sure this is finished. I had a dream about the funeral of an important person in my life and this is what came of it. What’s missing?
