Artist's Description

I painted this dual portrait in 2000 using acrylics on canvas. It was painted for my dear friend Drew Fleming, who I have known since Primary School and have remained close friends even when I was living in the UK and now while Drew is living in the Philippines. It portrays both Drew and his father, Andrew two of Australia’s leading exponents of Judo. Andrew Fleming Senior died in 2005. He was not only an 8th dan Black Belt but was also awarded the OAM (Order of Australia) in recognition of his services to the sport. Drew was coached by his Dad and is currently a 6th dan Black Belt. Both represented Australia in many international competitions. Drew was also my unofficial and self appointed ‘bodyguard’ in the early 60’s when having long (collar length) hair, wearing polka dots shirts and cuban heels in Perth, was more that enough reason to get me beaten up on a regular basis.
