Final of 4 digital artworks created for a WWF stamp issue for
Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique…sounds exotic, doesn’t it? So are these beautiful creatures. Again, like the last picture, the ref material for this artwork, although sharp, was very dark, with the lobster inside what looked like a black hole. But once again, by lightening the ref pic, I revealed the back of the cave, and was thereby able to include more color into the artwork which wasn’t visible in the photograph. The markings on these creatures were very time consuming to paint and I did them in small sections at a time. It took me a couple of days
(around 20 hour’s work). I don’t like to ‘sketch in’ detail, so I literally copied each tiny little swirl and all the little dots are more or less in exactly the right places. People often say to me: ‘But it’s for a STAMP!!! Why bother. It will never be seen?’
They may be right, but it makes no difference to me if the art is for a stamp or a 12 sheet billboard poster. I put the same amount of detail in, simply because I can, and I enjoy doing so, and I know the detail is there, even if no-one else does!
Obsessive compulsive? Not quite, but close…
