Artist's Description

The Barred Owl (Strix varia) is primarily nocturnal and sometimes active into midmornings and again in late afternoon, such as in this photo. Even the fresh carpet of snow is no match for this owl’s hearing as I carefully moved in from the side and at a distance. Their pronounced facial disc acts like a radar dish, guiding sounds to their ear openings. They have dark brown (virtually black) eyes.

This photo was taken near Brighton ON (Canada) with a hand held Canon EOS 20D, a 300mm f2.8 lens and a 1.4t.c.

Image is slightly cropped and processed in DPP
