Artist's Description

This tender moment between A Mother Great Horned Owl and her Owlet was captured on May 18 ‘09 in Ottawa’s East end. This Mother and her Owlet clearly demonstrates reciprocated affection. This photo makes me wonder; just how much do we know about the Great Horned Owls? This photo was taken after an episode of the Owlet’s clearly being rambunctious. At first He/she (the Owlet) grabbed onto a very small branch in front of him/her and started pecking at it, then pulling off some leaves. Then, grabbing at it and climbing onto it. With the Owlet nearly falling off the small branch, he/she clumsily hopped off of the little branch and nestled up to his/her mother while still clutching onto the branch.

A crystal-clear first for me… witnessing such a tender moment between an Adult Great Horned Owl and her Owlet in Ottawa’s east end.

Photo taken with a Canon EOS 20D, a 70-200mm f2.8 lens and a 1.4t.c.
