Artist's Description

James Tissot was a French painter, illustrator, and printmaker. Originally he was called Jean-Jacques, but he took the name James when he moved to England. Early in his career he painted historical costume pieces, but in about 1864 he turned to scenes of contemporary life, usually depicting stylish society women.
This painting depicts a fashionable women and her daughter beside the river. She is looking a an older gentleman sitting on a bench. This is one of many paintings depicting rivers and harbors.
