(Heterotheca villosa)

Flowers: Heads 1 to many. Numerous, lance-shaped, bright yellow ray florets, 6-15mm long with yellow to brown central disk florets 6-9mm long. Bracts white-hairy, pointed, overlapping 5-10mm long.
Blooms: July to September
Fruit: Head of flattened, pale gray to light-brown, hairy achenes 2-4mm long each with a double row of tawny-white bristles.
Leaves: Numerous, alternate, stalkless or with short stalks, Gray-green, oblong or broadly lance-shaped 205cm long, sometimes covered with slightly sticky hairs. Leaves longest near the middle of the plant. Lower leaves deciduous.
Growth Habit: Stiff-hairy, grayish-green, sprawling or ascending perennial herb, mostly 10-60cm tall with several rigid stems from a woody tap root. May form large patches.
Habitat and Range: Dry, open sandy prairie and hillsides often on southern exposures; river terraces; disturbed areas. Widespread in he southern half of Alberta. (Wildflowers of Alberta – Kathleen Wilkinson)
