Artist's Description

Parnassia palustris
Plant: Hairless perennial 10-30cm tall.
Leaves: mainly basil, heard-shaped, 0.5-2cm long, stalked; stem leaf single, heart-shaped, clasping lower stem.
Flowers: white, saucer-shaped, about 2cm across, with 5 sepals, 5 petals, 5 fertile stamens, 5 staminodia (sterile stamens) and an egg-shaped ovary; single.
Blooms: July to August.
Fruits: many-seeded capsules 8-12mm long.
Habitat: moist, open or shaded sites.
Native from Newfoundland to Alaska, south through the western US and around the world.
