Artist's Description

Featured in Wildflowers of North America – January 12, 2009

Plant: fleshy perennial 20-60cn tall, with thick, hollow stems.
Leaves: dark green, heart-shaped to kidney shaped, 5-17cm long, shallowly toothed, smaller and more widely notched upwards on the stem.
Flowers: bright, shiny yellow, saucer-shaped, 1.5-4cm across, with 5-9 petal-like sepals (no petals), 50-120 stamens and a dense cluster if pistils, flowers in branched clusters.
Blooms: April to June.
Fruits: capsules (follicles) 1-1.5cm long, borne in head-like clusters
Habitat: wet sites, often in shallow water.
Native across America and around the world.
This rather toxic plant has also been used for food and medicine, but it contains strong irritants that can cause blistering, and is poisonous if eaten raw.
