Artist's Description

Birdsfoot Trefoil is a leafy, fine-stemmed legume which obtained its name from its seed pod clusters, each of which resembles a bird’s foot (Figure 1). It is an ideal forage legume for long-term pasture production as it has a long productive life and does not cause bloat.

The plant is an erect to sprawling perennial 10-60cm tall. It has five ovate leaves, 5-15mm long leaflets (3 at the top and 2 near the stalk base). The flowers are bright yellow, sometimes tinges red; pealike, 1-2cm long with 3-6 flowers in flat-topped clusters on slender 5-10cm stalks. Blooms June to August in moist, disturbed sites.

Photo taken in Manitoba, Canada.
