Artist's Description

November 3, 2011

This delicate Manitoba wildflower is the famous Bluebell of Scotland. Although the Harebell is a hardy resilient plant, it is also the essence of fragility, with it’s graceful blue bells nodding on delicate stems.

Flowers are 1-5 per plant. Petals are joined to form a 5-lobed bell shaped corolla 1.5-2.5cm long. The petals are purplish blue (rarely white) and prominently veined. The leaves are numerous and alternate narrow linear to lance-shaped stem leaves 1-5cm long. Short-lived basal leaves are round to heart shaped on 2.5cm long stalks. Harebells are solitary, showy, slender single stemmed perennials with milky juice. They grow up to 45cms tall from slender rootstocks.
