Artist's Description

27 April 2009. I’m very excited to have this shot and the one accompanying it (Gupole Red Squirrel 1). The red squirrels that live in the woods around us and in the trees in our garden are very shy, disappearing at a rate of knots into the distance at the slightest sound – much shyer than the ones we encountered in the Lake District last year. Looking out of our bedroom window this morning, we saw this fellow’s mate hanging upside down from a branch and feeding at full stretch on the blossom. Of course by the time I had grabbed my camera and fitted the right lens, he had moved into a more reflective position. His mate, shown in this shot (or maybe her mate!) was feeding a little further down the tree, enjoying the delicious blossom. Gupole? – it’s the name of the hill in Tuscany where we live and now the name of our house (pronounced GOO – poley in Italian)

Canon 1DMkII with Canon 300mm f2.8L IS lens; ISO 400, f11 1/80
