Siena is one of my favourite Italian towns, I think it’s the colours. This shot was taken from the top of the campanile (Torre del Mangia) of the town hall; the shadows of both are playing on the campo. A couple of weeks after this shot, the campo came alive with its twice-yearly palio horse race. Here it was just business as usual.
The 102 metre high Torre del Mangia was built between 1325 and 1344 with its crown designed by the painter, Lippo Memmi. The tower was designed to be taller than the tower in neighboring rival Florence; at the time it was the tallest structure in Italy. It was fitted with a mechanical clock during the mid 14th century. It’s staggering to realise that this magnificent tower is over 650 years old!!
