Falling I Remember Well

Falling I remember well—
At first,
Into catches;
Always trusting hands to be there—
Which in time
Found new bundles-of-joy,
New pinkness;
A new ration of family-ties
For softening callous,
The dry residue-scales
Of day-in and day-out.

Labor gets to us—
The do-or-die sense
Of converting energy
Back into food,
Shelter,
Quality-time to do nothing—
Yes, for me
That is true Quality-time;
The Nothing that turns into art,
Poetry,
And love—
Love must simply happen;
Be uncovered in our Spare-time,
After all else has failed—
And we are still willing
To try anything binding
Before committing
Entirely to God.
