“The Other Side of Light”

When First I saw you—
Caught by your smile,
Too long I had stayed
My heart kept in exile—
Islands apart
Captains
Without charts—
(Time can sail away, but
Never far enough away,
Hearts sadly
Tacking on alone,
Slipping the troughs,
Riding the crests
But never truly on;
Hidden in depths
Of sea and night,
Standing on highs
Still reaching for stars

Yet always—

The other side
Of light)

As the ocean life tides

In its ebbs sad memories
Can hide

But if love to be lived again
One must dare to rush upon
The ever thirsting shore—

Far greater than any
Loss known
Is that of the heart’s aching
If allowed
Too long
To remain alone

And if given chance
Once more the heart
Shone will be brighter
For each sorrow;

If the past let gone
The heart
Allowed new hope
Will always see
Love’s tender dawn

Let the soul
Turn loose of its pain
That drove caring away,
Convincing
An ailing heart
That nothing good
Of love was
Left to say

Once again let recall
Love’s tumble
And crashing fall

Feel stronger for it all

Certain that heaven
Not only above
But near as one’s heart
When a heart
Given new permission
To again
Seek love—

(Time can sail away, but
Never far enough away,
Hearts sadly
Tacking on alone,
Slipping the troughs,
Riding the crests
But never truly on;
Hidden in depths
Of sea and night,
Standing on highs
Still reaching for stars

Yet always—

The other side
Of light)
