Broken Glass "Moving"

Ch. 2 – “Moving”

The sunshine stung my face, waking me. Immediately, I tried to fall back asleep. My dream was too wonderful, I didn’t want to wake up. It didn’t work, I was already awake. My feet were tingling, my legs sore. My eyes opened slowly.

All of a sudden I remembered. Oh no! Today was the day we moved. I jumped out of bed and ran down stairs. Sylvia was wearing a pair of corduroy pants and a big purple T-shirt. It was covered by a black and green striped apron. She washed dishes as Peter sat at the table eating an overflowing bowl of cereal. He was wearing tight brown jeans, with a black belt. His white shirt was tucked in, professionally.

Peter was reading the news paper, all ready for work. He worked at a desk in a huge building in the city.

What a boring job!

Sylvia turned around and greeted me as I entered. Peter nodded. He was too absorbed in the article he was reading to say anything to me. That was fine with me, I nodded back, and walked over to Sylvia. She gave me a kiss on the cheek and went back to washing dishes. I glanced down.

What was that? I wondered.

I bent over to pick it up. What was it? I couldn’t tell. It was very shiny, it shimmered in the light.

“Honey?” Sylvia’s voice sounded a little stressed. I looked at her. “What is it baby?” She asked. Looking at my hand, held up near my face. I noticed nothing was there. She tapped my shoulder. “Lizy?”

I looked at her, confused. “Uh…never mind.” What had just happened? This just made me tense. Many ideas raced through my head. I shuddered. oh god, was I going insane? I shook my head, trying to clear it.

“Beep, beep,” I jumped as Peter’s beeper rang. Ouch. He turned it off and stood up. I studied his face, staring into his eyes. He looked excited, but his body tensed. His hand raised to wave, but fell back down, softly, to his side. Peter’s news paper fell and he ran out the door.

How strange!

I heard the car door slam shut. Then the car turned on and drove off. I listened to the car wobble down the street till the sound faded into nothingness. Just like the shiny object…kinda!

“Um…,” I forced out. Sylvia nodded, unsure.

She glanced at the clock. “Oh shoot,” she whispered, “Our plains in an hour!”

Damn it! I thought to myself. If only it were different… But, I didn’t know how different it would soon become.
