Artist's Description

After living in a ‘Gulf State’ for 18 months, I finally went out and experienced the ‘real Middle East’ in August. Bustling streets, friendly people and kids, lived in cities were all part of the charm. I felt far more at home wandering the backstreets and alleys than I ever have in Doha.

This is Madaba in Jordan. A town with thriving Muslim and Christian populations living side by side, with churches next to mosques. It has some beautiful Byzantine mosaics in and around the town, but the most striking feature came after dark when the first spurts of AK47 fire could be heard ringing out around the town. We later learned that the end of school exam results had been released and that kids all over the country were celebrating.
