Wall Art

Artist's Description

A wing of the Louvre, seen through one of the old clocks preserved in the Musee d’Orsay, once one of Paris’s busiest railway stations and now the site of one of its best art galleries/art museums. The clocks are massive, maybe 4 metres high, and the views through these clocks (which still work, incidentally) are stunning. No photography is allowed within the museum but you can carry your camera, so when these clocks loom up in your view, everyone goes nuts.

The Gare d’Orsay was built in time for the 1900 Paris Exposition but by 1939 had proved unsuitable for the new longer trains. After a chequered career as a railway station, with threats that it would be demolished for a hotel, it was eventually opened in its current iteration as a museum in 1986. Its holdings of Impressionist and post-Impressionist works is the largest in the world, and it is an amazing experience to see ‘in the flesh’ paintings which have formed an intrinsic part of our cultural map.

There is a plaque on the outside wall acknowledging the arrival between April and August 1945 of many of the French survivors of the concentration camps, prisoner of war camps and forced work camps, making the Gare d’Orsay the most significant repatriation centre for French WWII war prisoners.

Taken 7 August 2012, Canon EOS 400D, Sigma 18-200mm lens, 1/250th, f/10, ISO 200, focal length 18mm. Fiddled about with, using almost every option offered by Picasa!
