Artist's Description

The Grand Bazaar in Istanbul is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world. It has more than 58 covered streets and over 1,200 shops. It is a huge tourist attraction and it is estimated that between 250,000 and 400,000 people visit it daily.
The Grand Bazaar was opened in 1461. It is well known for its jewellery, pottery, spice, and carpet shops. Many of the stalls in the bazaar are grouped by the type of goods they sell, with special areas being allocated for leather coats, gold jewellery, plates and other specialist goods.
The bazaar was greatly expanded during the 16th century, during the reign of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent . It was massively restored in 1894 following an earthquake. (Reference Wikepedia)
