Artist's Description

The view from Imja Tse, Nepal. This was my first really high, cross-a-glacier, mountain. I’d spent a few weeks trekking, and was pretty acclimatised, and keen for the climb. The two other guys I was with (who I met in Kathmandu) hired porters to take their gear to high camp, but I soldiered on with my pack, and was kind of glad I did. It felt like I was really climbing a mountain! We spent a night at high camp, and headed off at 3 am the next morning, headlamps and cold fingers. I soloed the last icy snow climb, not wanting to be roped to someone who’d never been on snow or ice before, and who struck me as a tad cavalier. We all made it though… and grinned foolishly at the top. I let the others leave and sat there for about half an hour, letting the emotion wash over me, and enjoy the isolation and amazing view towards Ama Dablam. I also steadfastly avoided looking behind me, where the huge face of Nuptse rose another two-and-a-half kilomteres above me, just to underline the fact that I was nowhere near the big league yet!
