Mr. Postman: A Mikie Story

This is a true story about Mikie the “guard” Lizard! WARNING: May cause uncontrollable laughter.

“Mr. Postman”

One sunny morning I decided to take Mikie, my 5 foot 12 pound iguana outside to enjoy the warm rays. Mikie is one of the few iguanas I know of that will tolerate a harness. So for her safety and my piece of mind, I ALWAY put her pink harness with a 6 foot lead on her when ever she is out side. Why, one may ask, well for the simple reason that as soon as she gets out side it is a different world. She could become afraid and run away, find a tree, and run right up it. For those who don’t know, an iguana can run fast as lighting and climb better than any cat. In fact once they get up a tree more than likely they will never come down. In the wild they spend their lives in 100 foot trees. The females only come down to lay eggs in the sand, then they return to the tree. Needless to say, she wears a harness when outside! With that being said, back to the story. So we we’re outside sitting on my front steps when the postman was spotted across the street. It never crossed my mind in a million years that there would be any problem what so ever when it was time for him to deliver our mail. But to my shock, I was wrong! The post man walked up my driveway to reach the front porch steps. Spotting a long green thing next to me, quietly minding her own business by the way, he stopped dead in his tracks and stared. I noticed right away his reaction and from passed encounters, I knew what was on his mind. Immediately I state with all confidence, “Oh don’t worry, she won’t bother you, lizards aren’t like dogs.” I said with a chuckle, “Besides, she’s more afraid of you than you are of her.” continued with a content in my knowledge and tone. The postman looked at me, then Mikie and proceeded to the steps, No sooner did he make one step when Mikie CHARGED him! She just charged right at him, just like the very thing I protested she was not like. As She did this, the postman panicked and backed away tripping over his own feet. He almost fell but instead he spilled his mail bag, letters took flight and landed all over the driveway.Well I got a STARE. As he picked up the letters to be delivered, I scooped up Mikie scolding her in the process for what good that would do. Mikie looked at me as if to say, “Well he shouldn’t have walked up here, he isn’t family.” Then she stuck her nose in the air as she turned her head away. I apologized to the postman and stated “I don’t know WHAT got into her, she never does that!” He smiled and then we both laughed softly. Soon he asked “What kind of lizard is that?” I informed him she was a tropical lizard called an iguana. The postman responded, looking at Mikie, “MMMmmmm, I have my neighbor from Mexico, he has a good recipe for you.” I don’t know what Mikie knew at that point, but she squirmed from my grip and climbed onto my head hiding her face in my long hair behind my neck. At that point the postman and I laughed as I stated “Oh Mikie he’s only kidding, he isn’t not going to eat you.”As the postman left he handed me my mail, turned around, and went on to deliver the rest of the mail. I waved good-bye as he walked. Then Mikie and I went back into the house.
